The Way of the Shaman Drum

The spiritual aspects of Shamanism are inured in mystery and some believe Shaman doctors and healers can tell the future and ward off demon spirits during special dance ceremonies. Nonetheless in the film, The Way of the Shaman Drum, the director João Meirinhos, provides viewers with a earthlier and pragmatic account of those involved in Shaman Culture as Manchu-ethnic minorities living in northeastern China’s Changbai Mountain, Jilin Province. 70-year-old Guan Yunde, a promoter of Manchu’s Shamanism culture, works alongside a business partner and has designed and built Shaman drums. He has unearthed Shamanism’s mysteries. Shamans hold animals dear to their hearts and sustain a polytheistic faith, meaning that all living beings, including animals, have a spirit and are god-like. Hence, in northeast China alone, they worship the god of tiger, god of wolf and so on. Shamanism is more about loving nature and ancient Manchu culture than with participating in so-called demon spirit dances. Guan lived in a home with many generations of Manchu ancestors, while his father was recognized as a tribal leader. They used kiwi wood to make Shaman drums, since it displays few defects when carving. For some people, Shamanism is perceived as evil, but for the Manchu-ethnics, such as Guan Yunde, it’s simply a proud part of the Manchu culture that deserves to get passed down to future generations.

João Meirinhos

João is an ethnographic filmmaker and a researcher. He’s been working for various socially engaging organisations focusing on social justice and environmental awareness since 2007 – using audiovisual tools to trigger cultural exchange and mediate dialogue between people. Since 2011 he developed a solar powered itinerant cinema project sponsored by Italian NGO Bambini Nel Deserto. With ‘Cinema du Desert’ he has had the possibility to travel and work in West Africa and Central Asia. An MA in Visual Anthropology with the University of Manchester led him to undertake fieldwork in the Peruvian Amazon that culminated in the feature documentary ‘The Mirror of the Spirit’ (the first part ‘Afluentes’ was very well received in ethnographic festivals world wide). Ever since João has been based between UK, Hong Kong and Lisbon as a audiovisual freelancer.

In the past, any tourist entering Badajoz in Portugal had to pass Zé Marôvas’ door – which would thus entice customers. Today, after the construction of the highway, Zé Marôvas remains waiting for hours without anyone going into his shop. ” Such is the synopsis of “Passing to Zé Marôvas” by Aurora Ribeiro, filmed in 2007 in Redondo with José Manuel Marôvas, based on an original idea by João Jorge Sarantopoulos (Tobis Prize for Best Short Film in Doclisboa ’09).

Takis Panas

Takis was born in southern Greece and now lives in southern Portugal where he earns his livelihood as an archaeologist-museologist and curator of exhibitions. He is involved in many cultural and heritage activities within the Borough of Evora. He his a passionate screenwriter and and produces short films and documentaries on intangible and tangible heritage. It was  Juri of the fil festival Cine-eco directed by Lauro António and took part of the committe of the FIKE Film Festival

Smiles of Peace

The yoga of laughter is a therapy that combines four actions: play, sing, dance and laugh, which makes us children again and allows us to approach a state of full happiness. This therapy unifies laughter (body), humor (mind) and love (spirit), basic principles of meditation. It works as a game dynamic, which progressively traps the participants. The benefits are innumerable, among them, the improvement in breathing, reactivation of metabolism and stimulation of a better emotional state. The documentary “Sonrisas de Paz” shows the journey made by the therapist Claudio Ortega Pérez, performing yoga sessions of laughter and fire homa in places in Chile that have been the scene of tragic or violent episodes throughout history, with the object of transforming their energy and clearing them of the negative charge that has persisted through time.

Filmclubism in BF

In Baixada Fluminense, independent cultural groups began a filmclub movement that brings cinema to the viewer. For over a decade, these film clubs have a massive role on the social upbringing of suburb regions and the starting of a dialog to change the day-to-day of these cities. This documentary shows the role of six of the major filmclubs in Baixada Fluminense; Cineclube Mate com Angu, from Duque de Caxias; Cineclube Buraco do Getulio, from Nova Iguaçu; Cineclube Donana, from Belford Roxo; Cineclube Cinema de Guerrilha, from São João de Meriti; Cineclube Xuxu com Xis, from Austin; and Facção Feminista Cineclube, from Duque de Caxias. These film clubs take movies to squares, to bars, to schools and to where else there is a place to show. Promote film clubs is preserve the possibility of gathering, of relating with another and the pleasure of share and motivate people.

Carol Vilamaro

Journalist graduated from Faculdade Pinheiro Guimarães.
She studied filmmaking at the Darcy Ribeiro Film School and professional photography at Senac.
Participated in the Laboratory of training in audiovisual in the Produtora Escola Cinema Nosso during every year of 2017.
She was already was director, producer, social media, collaborator and photographer of several films.
She is one of the directors of the BaixadaFilma movement, a movement that began with a manifesto for the territorialization of the budgets of Audiovisual for the Baixada Fluminense, peripheral region of Rio de Janeiro. Curator of Circuito #BaixadaFilma, an itinerant film show with productions by directors from the region. Producer and exhibitor at the Mostra #BaixadaFilma, staged until June 21, 2018 at the Hélio Oiticica Municipal Arts Center, Tiradentes Square – Rio de Janeiro.
Creator of the Volcanic Orange, a seal of independent productions of the Baixada Fluminense. In 2017 she released the documentary Cinema Delas addressing the role of women in film. In the same year he had a documentary project approved in the Cultural Territories edict of the Secretary of Culture of the State and launched on March 8, 2018 in the Odeon a documentary about the cineclubista movement of the Baixada Fluminense, the Cineclubismo in the BF.

Barbara Cunha

Barbara Cunha holds a Design and postgraduated in Studies of Image and Contemporary Culture. She began her career in cinema in 2000 and in 2007 she founded the 99 Produções with the aim of producing audiovisual works and art visual work that have technical and artistic quality for the national and international markets. Her company works with international co-productions, we aim to fully involve the participating countries not only focusing on the financial support, but also in the artistic and technical collaborations between the partners. She is currently directing 2 documentaries and developing a feature fiction film. In visual arts, she uses the photography as her main platform. Most of her personal projects deals with the feminine, the body image its transformations, achievements, limitations, fears, scars. Fertile Land at Full Tide

Birth is, in many peoples, a time of celebration and worship. However, over the years, the hospitalization of childbirth has destroyed many of the roots that linked us to the ancestral culture. The documentary discusses stories of women who exercised the profession of partaking and brought knowledge that goes beyond obstetric training, presenting birth in a natural and humanized way. The relationship between midwife and parturient, non-medical solutions, and spirituality appear as paths to female freedom while they represent a connection with the ancestry erased by time.
