Heritales in the Covento Dos Remedios,  “Cinema no Convento”

The initiative “Cinema no Convento” this year with Technology and Humnity
a proposal of the Resource Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage – PCI, started in 2019 by the Resource Center of the PCI with the collaboration of the International Heritage Film Festival – “HERITALES” with the aim of raising awareness the space and work of the Resource Center as well as its content developed in cinema.

This year’s theme is “Technology and Humanity,” inviting us to reflect on the complex relationship between technology and the human condition.
In this film series, we propose a journey through works that discuss topics such as artificial intelligence, robotics, digital ethics, and, in particular, the intersection between technology and intangible cultural heritage. How are technological innovations shaping the transmission, preservation, and reinvention of traditions? We invite you to reflect.

This film portrays the contrast between natural life forms, cultural constructions, and the ways of scientifically recovering, with new technologies, the identities of communities that lack written historical records. A scientific expedition from the University of Zurich travels to southern Chile, uncovering the history of the Mapuche community and their life records, searching in virtually unconnected places where technology has not yet reached. The film raises several questions about ethics, the information obtained through new technologies, and their potential political and malicious use. At the same time, it reveals the possibilities of innovation in finding identity groups that struggle for survival by learning small, still-living pieces of culture, such as the language of their ancestors, Mapudungun.

Heritales @ European Archeological Days (13th of June 2025)

The whole world of the past, alongside you in the present: the knowledge of tapestries, architecture and education

The Heritales Heritage Festival aims to share scientific knowledge with the public through cinema. In collaboration with the Pinto Monteiro Archaeology Laboratory (University of Évora), they present a series of films and debates that highlight both material and immaterial knowledge essential for the sustainable maintenance of communities. We invite participants to explore and share the world through the perspectives of the people who continue to inhabit it. They emphasize the importance of enjoying a rich Heritage, recognizing the influence of other cultures on our own, and highlighting the ongoing preservation of technical knowledge originating from Middle Eastern cultures.

Heritales Awards – Almada-Portugal (5th, 6th,7th and 8th of June 2025)

Awards Ceremony 2024-25, Films Screening and music

Heritales celebrates the awards ceremony of the 2024 competition. We would like to invite you all to a four nights celebration of films about “The Role Peace for Sustainable Communities”. The event will take place in various locations in the municipality of Almada-Portugal  (please see below)

This year we are going to explore amazing work from all over the world that present peace and the effect of conflict and war on sustainable communities, inline with the UNESCO Chair of Education for Global Peace and Sustainability.

We are also trilled to announce that we have partnership with the APCAlmada, which will give us the opportunity to celebrate local traditions trough dance and music. Please come and enjoy these free documentary cinema and other incredible activities with us!

Heritales @ Scoil Ide Limerick – Ireland (4th of June 2025)

Animation Showcse Scoil Ide

We invite you to come and join us in the halla in Scoil Ide for a fantastic evening of animation, as we showcase the works of local and international animators.

Our own past pupils, Mikey Mahon and Fiadh Browne, will return for the screening of some of their animations, and stay for a chat about their craft and projects.

As well as this, a wonderful collection of movies from the Heritales International Heritage Film Festival have been selected for screening..

Heritales @ Auditorio Costa de Caparica – Portugal (18th of May 2025)

Cinema Gandaia

Amazing  date at The Auditorium in Costa de Caparica, in one of the most beautiful area of the South Bay of Lisbon (Portugal) in collaboration with the Association Gandaia present on this territory since long time.
First we will present a short out of competition documentary about local life in Costa de Caparica by Do and the TWOLINES Family.
After we will present the stunning documentary by Mana Garcia, The Songs of TIme, the “Echoes of an ancestral chant resonate deep in the jungle of Misiones, Argentina. They are the voices of the Mbya Guaraní people who preserve their musical legacy through the songs of their children”.

Heritage Exhibition & Cinema at The Library FCT-Nova

An evening of great art, music, traditions and cinema at the FCT-Nova Library in Caparica – Almada (Portugal)

The Organizing Committee of the Heritales – International Heritage Film Festival, in partnership with the Library of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Caparica Campus, curated by Professor José J. G. Moura (FCT-NOVA), have the honor to extend this invitation to:

The inauguration of the exhibition of trophies created by students of the Master’s Degree in Science and Art of Glass and Ceramics VICARTE (Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon). The event will take place on May 7, 2025 at 5 pm, at the Library of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Caparica Campus, 2829-516 Caparica. The exhibition is curated by Professor Helena Elias (FBAUL-VICARTE), Professor Marta Castelo (FBAUL-VICARTE) and Professor Fernando Quintas (FBAUL-VICARTE).
At each edition, the Heritales festival holds a trophy exhibition. These artistic pieces, by Vera Andrade, Miranda Winter, Kasia Lendzion and Igor Minin, will be presented, as prizes, at the final ceremony of the Heritales – International Heritage Film Festival.

This event takes place one month after the opening of the exhibition, on June 6, 2025 at 6 pm. They come up with a variety of creative solutions for designing the different award categories. It shows different possibilities of using textures with the materials used, predominantly glass and ceramics. Trophies respect the care of heritage in a broad sense. They share an attachment to a sustainable world, revealing respect for community life, with empathetic and ecological values ​​aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. In this sense, the opening of the exhibition will feature an interactive dialogue between the exhibition itself and the artistic mediation of the authors of the pieces, when we will have a unique moment of dialogue between the materiality of the pieces, the mental universe of the artists, and the interpretations of the visiting public.

The sample includes all the awards awarded for the current 2024-2025 edition, dedicated to the “Role of peace in sustainable communities”, and this edition of the Heritales festival is supported by the UNESCO Chair in Education for Sustainable Global Peace at the University of Lisbon. Several sculptures from the prizes awarded for the 2022 festival will also be on display, given that the special circumstances of the SARs-Covid confinement period did not allow some of the trophies to reach their respective award-winning authors.

Heritage Cinema at The Library FCT-Nova

An evening of great art and traditions trough cinema at the FCT-Nova Library in Caparica – Almada (Portugal)

Heritales – International Heritage Film Festival presents a program of several film sessions on tangible and intangible heritage, where the landscape, communities and architecture of various places around the world are revealed as scenarios of social unity, of community ties that create relationships of stability and solidarity. These are manifested through the transmission of traditional knowledge, techniques and rites, community support in the face of problems and threats to communities and which allow for the construction of relationships with the natural environment that are sustainable in the long term. Unfortunately, these forms of heritage are often questioned by the context of current globalization, which does not coincide well with the rhythms of a world that is no longer balanced and is forgetting the foundations of its pre-industrial past, which promotes sustainable ways of life with its immediate surroundings.

Heritage Cinema at Acdemy of Fine Arts

An evening of great art and traditions trough cinema at the Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa.

Three amazing documentaries from different sides of the world: the first is  DEQ from Turkish director Furkan Aydın. A short story about DEQ  traditional skin design, The second one, Namarali,  from  Australian director Tim Mummery who tells the story of artist Yorna Woolagoodja and his traditional ancestral culture, and the last one with director Salem Bilal who with is work Summer Pack tells the story of Marrocan characters and their choice to leave in isolation, but immerse in a rich culture environment.
