Heritales @ ASSP – Évora – Portugal (20th of September 2022)

Queens of Orango

The Festival Heritales is honored to invite you to its session in partnership with ASSP – Associação de Solidariedade Social dos Professores, which will screen the film of the competition of the V Edition entitled Queens of Orango.

In Guinea-Bissau there are islands where a very special people live, the Bijagós. They live in harmony with nature, taking from it only what is necessary for their survival. Their deep spirituality marks their lives with rituals leading to the acquisition of knowledge from their ancestors. Especially in Bijagós society, women are the protagonists. They decide how to manage the crops or punish crimes, they are the priestesses of the temple, who manage to communicate with the gods, with the forces of nature and the spirits of the dead. The woman is feared and respected.
This documentary focuses on the lives of women in Eticoga, the main town on the island of Orango.

The presentation will be given by Almudena Martíon Pérez, coordinator of the Córboba sections in this V edition of Heritales 2022, and will take place at the headquarters of Espacio Plástico (Avda Almogávares, 17) in collaboration with the Industrial Heritage Association of Córdoba.

Projecto Outeiro do Circo collaborates again with Festival Heritales – International Heritage Film Festival, to organize a session in Beja during the month of September.

Miguel Serra, scientific director of the Outeiro do Circo Project, is part of the organizing committee of Heritales, which in 2022 is dedicated to Archaeology, Heritage and Nature and for the first time will include a projection space in the city of Beja.

MNE National Museum of Ethnology – Lisbon

The National Museum of Ethnology is inseparable from the history of Portuguese anthropology. In it, a fundamental dimension of the work of the pioneers of this discipline in the country is projected. From the Center for Ethnology Studies, which he has directed since 1947, Jorge Dias and those who will accompany him in subsequent years, Margot Dias, Ernesto Veiga de Oliveira, Fernando Galhano and Benjamim Pereira, among others, begin an extensive and continuous research on elements of material culture that, years later, would also be collected to form the museum’s collections. The path of that anthropologist will lead him and Margot Dias to the north of Mozambique where, in successive periods of fieldwork, starting in 1957, they will build a solid ethnography about the Maconde people. The partial result of that investigation will be the subject of an exhibition held in Lisbon in 1959 and it is in this context that the explicit intention of creating a Museum of Ethnology arises. In 1965 the museum was created with the ambitious program of representing the cultures of the peoples of the globe, not being restricted, therefore, neither to Portugal nor to the overseas domains under its administration.

Museu Rainha D. Leonor & Projeto Outeiro do Circo

Museum/Church.  Santo Amaro Church is one of the oldest churches in the city of Beja, it houses an important Museum collection from the Visigothic period.

Film projection in a heritage space. Creating synergies with cultural groups and local associations. Communication made with the support of the Grupo de Amigos do Museu Regional de Beja and the involvement of various cultural associations.

The Outeiro do Circo archaeological project (PAOC) investigates the Late Bronze Age fortified settlement of Outeiro do Circo (1250-850 BC), located in the municipality of Beja, Alentejo, South of Portugal. Another line of work of the project, since its beginning, has been the dissemination of archaeological knowledge among the community. Beyond the archaeological works developed since 2008 in the framework of two scientific projects (2008-2013 and 2014-2017), the PAOC also promoted the research of the Bronze Age in the region of Beja. Other activities developed by the project are the training of students from various scientific areas through their participation, as volunteers, in the archaeological fieldworks; the creation and maintenance of links with the local community, through the accomplishment of several public archaeology and heritage education activities; and the touristic promotion of the region through their heritage values.
